Other HDB Timing Rules to Know

Hacking must finish within 3 days

Demolition and the removal of wall and floor finishes must be completed within three consecutive days. Plan all the hacking together at the start of the job. See what you can and cannot remove in our guide to HDB hacking rules.

Tell your neighbours 5 days before

Give written notice to the neighbours within two units of your flat at least five days before works begin, and display a notice outside your flat with the contractor’s details and the renovation dates.

Finish within the permit period

Renovation must be completed within three months for a newly completed block and within one month for an existing block, counted from the date of the permit.

Get the permit first

Works such as hacking walls, changing floor finishes and altering bathrooms need an HDB permit before they start. Your contractor applies for it, and the contractor must be listed in HDB’s Directory of Renovation Contractors. See how long HDB takes to approve a renovation.

How to Plan Your Renovation Around the Hours

The rules shape the order of work more than most owners expect. This is how our project managers schedule a typical job.

  • Hacking first, on weekdays. It has to fit into three consecutive weekdays, so it is booked as one block, not spread across weeks.
  • Tiling and drilling on weekdays. Tile cutting and drilling for carpentry are noisy works, so they stop at 5pm and do not run on Saturdays.
  • Quiet works on Saturdays. Painting, plastering, touch-ups and cleaning can continue until 6pm on Saturdays, which keeps the job moving.
  • Watch the calendar. A public holiday and its eve can take two working days out of a week. Check the dates before fixing your move-in day.
  • Leave a buffer. Deliveries and inspections slip. Leave spare days before the permit period ends.

For the full sequence from key collection to move-in, see our HDB renovation checklist. For drilling rules in detail, see HDB drilling time.

What Happens if the Rules Are Broken?

Neighbours can report noise outside the allowed hours to HDB, and the contractor can be penalised. Complaints also slow the job down, because works may have to stop while they are looked into. A contractor who knows the rules will plan around them from the start, so this should never become your problem.
